THE CYCLONE IN ORISSA

Introduction:-Cyclone is a natural calamity. It is a violent wind storm. It is caused by a sudden low pressure. It is often accompanied with heavy rain. It does not move in a straight course. It always moves round and round. Generally cyclones occur in hot countries.
Cyclones happen in Orissa : Orissa is a cyclone prove state of India. The Bay of Bengal lies to the east of Orissa. When there is a low pressure in the sea it very often turns into a cyclone and does a great damage to the coastal people. The people of Orissa have many bitter experiences of cyclones. There have been cyclones in Orissa in the year 1936, 1942, 1952, 1963, 1968, 1973, 1983. Year after year Orissa has been suffering from the cataclysm of cyclone. Cause :- The cyclone occured in 1999 October 29th, caused a terrible damage and surpassed all the previous ones in severity. It has been narrated as the super cyclone. It devastated the coastal districts of Orissa and caused in estimable damage to life and property.

The super cyclone :- The Super Cyclone blew at a speed of 350 km per hour. Heavy showers of rain lashed down. Peals of thunder were accompanied by flashes of lightening. It blew in circles causing colossal damages.

Its effects:-  It knocked down the houses, trees were uprooted. Cities and settlements were terribly lashed. The sea was upset. Waves rose 5 to 8 metres high and in undated the whole coastal areas. Large parts of Jagatsingpur, Kendrapara, Paradeep, Pottamundai were submerged under water. Many villages were wiped away. Thousands of men, women, children, animals and birds were killed. Crops were totally ruined. People became homeless. They went without food for days. Many were suffered from epidemic diseased. Every where there was only death, despair and desolution.

Relief measures :- Ministers from the centre and state rushed to the cyclone hit areas. Relief and rescue operations began. Relief materials came pouring in from all parts of India as well as from abroad. The economic backbone of the state had been shattered beyond recovery.

Conclusion :- No human effort can prevent any natural calamity. But steps can be taken to lesson its severity. A wide forest belt should be created. Cyclone proof houses should be built in coastal areas. Proper scientific measures should be taken to fore-warn the people.
